When Someone Has Died in the House

Your buyers should know if there is something unusual about the house, including death and the cause.

We Buy Houses – New Orleans LA: The thought of someone meeting their demise in a house won’t upset everyone who comes to look at your house for sale. It will, however, be unnerving enough to many that they will simply choose not to buy that house. People can be very superstitious when it comes to having someone die in the house.

The way the person died will be important information to share. In fact, in many states you must divulge the fact that someone died there, especially if it is a notorious murder case or if it is believed that the house is haunted. Having an elderly owner simply die at home in the house is not usually a big deal. If the owner fell down the stairs and hit her head on the floor, this might be a different scenario altogether. If a murder has occurred there it will bring up some unwanted emotions in buyers and they must have the chance to decide whether they can live with the idea or not. Another negative death scene might be one in which a crime was being committed.

“Where it isn’t required, think carefully about hiding the fact that someone died in your house.”

The owners were drug dealers, for example, and were snuffed out by rival drug lords. Most buyers would want to know that. In states that require full disclosure, death in the house is considered material and factual and most of those states have a time period to which it applies. Where it isn’t required, think carefully about hiding the fact that someone died in your house. When the new owners take possession of the house and begin to make acquaintance with the neighbors they are bound to hear about it anyway. You could end up in court if the circumstances of death were such that any reasonable buyer would be tempted to back out of the deal as they would no longer feel comfortable there.

Houses with notorious death scenes tend to attract looky loos so your buyers need to know if that’s a possibility. It might cause you to drop the price of the house from the market value to get it sold. Don’t be discouraged, though. Many people are not at all superstitious and won’t think much about it. Some may even welcome the thought of the added character that goes along with the house. The point is that your buyers should know if there is something unusual about the house, including death and the cause.
